The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has introduced new registration requirements for undocumented immigrants aged 14 and older. Key aspects of this mandate include:

  • Mandatory Registration: Undocumented immigrants must register with the federal government, providing personal information such as fingerprints and home addresses.
  • Penalties for Non-Compliance: Failure to register may result in fines up to $5,000 and imprisonment for up to six months.
  • Online Registration Process: Registrants are required to create an account on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to submit their information.
  • Proof of Registration: Individuals must always carry proof of registration.

This initiative aims to enhance immigration enforcement by ensuring that undocumented immigrants are accounted for in federal records.

The DHS has not yet specified the exact timeline for implementation but has indicated that the registration form will be available on the USCIS website soon

Steps to Report & Obtain an I-94:

Canadian citizens generally do not require a Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) when entering the United States for short visits, particularly for tourism or business purposes. This exemption applies mainly to entries by land or sea.

Check Online – Visit the CBP I-94 Website to see if an electronic I-94 was automatically generated upon entry. https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/home

What to do if you did not receive the i94 or your i94 is incorrect:

If there is a mistake on your I-94 record (such as incorrect dates, misspelled names, or wrong visa classification), you need to correct it as soon as possible to avoid issues with your legal status by contacting a deferred inspection site.

The Deferred Inspection Site staff is available to review and issue the necessary documents to remedy errors recorded on arrival documents issued at the time of entry to the United States relating to improper non-immigrant classification, inaccurate biographical information or incorrect period of admission, if appropriate. Any designated deferred inspection location or CBP office located within an international airport should be able to assist you, regardless of where the actual document was issued.
